Hello Bluesky!

Over the past week, I’ve been delighted to see a significant increase in followers on Bluesky — thank you to everyone who has connected! It’s exciting to witness the platform’s growth (approaching 23 million users now) and the many new faces joining the conversation.

That said, I’ve noticed a curious pattern among some of these new accounts: quite a few have no bio information, no posts, and are following a large number of people. This makes sense in a way — perhaps these newcomers are observing for now, getting a feel for the Bluesky vibe before diving in. It’s worth noting, though, that blank profile info, no posts and following lots of other users are behaviours that some consider characteristic of spam or bot accounts.

So here’s the challenge: when I come across an account like this, it’s a total blank canvas. Without even a single post or a short bio, it’s hard to get a sense of who you are, what interests you, or why we might have a connection worth nurturing. And without that, it’s difficult to decide whether to follow back.

Here’s a gentle suggestion for new Bluesky users:

If you do nothing else when you join, post a quick “Hello, Bluesky!” or even “Hello, world!” Just something simple to show you’re here and that you might have something to share down the line.

'Hello Bluesky!' post
Two words and a click

Your greeting doesn’t have to be elaborate — just a small gesture to let others know you’re more than just a blank profile. You might be surprised how much difference a simple post can make in sparking new connections and conversations.

Welcome to Bluesky — I’m looking forward to seeing what you have to say!
