A new technology tool that started rolling out during the past week is Google Wave, what Google dryly describes as “an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration.â€
It’s got a lot of people articulating a lot of opinions, pro and con.
The Google Wave website contains a wealth of information explaining Google Wave including a one-hour-20-minute video announcing the product in May: ideal if you really want to get under the technical hood, so to speak.
While there are lots of videos out there, the most watchable I’ve found so far is What is Google Wave? by Epipheo Studios.
Two minutes and 15 seconds containing probably all you need to know right now to grasp what Google Wave can do for you. All expressed in contemporary terms. Dry this is not.
Is Google Wave something communicators need to pay attention to? I’d say unquestionably yes, at least in order to understand its significance in the workplace in this rapidly-changing and -evolving world in which we live.
Access to Google Wave is by invitation only. I don’t have one, but would love one (I’ve been on Google’s waiting list for months).
If you can’t yet try it out directly, read what others are doing with it and what they think of it. And watching a video is probably next best.

That is a really good video for people who don’t have the time to sit through a 1 hour 20 minute video. I don’t have a wave account either, but I can see from the reviews that communications are definitely going to improve with the use of Google Wave.
I’m interested in how wave actually works. Is all the content posted to it hosted on Google? If this is so, I can’t see organizations using it for sensitive information.
Google has revolutionized our way of collaborating though, so no doubt we will see enterprise specific versions of Google Wave in the future.
